A Guide to Page Boy and Bridesmaid Outfits for Kids

If you thought buying 2 year old birthday gifts was tough, wait until you have a wedding! It's a challenge to know what to do when your son or daughter is invited to be part of a wedding ceremony.

The honour and excitement of being a bridesmaid, flower girl or page boy, start from the moment you say ‘I do’.

With this in mind, we've put together some ideas for inspiration for the best kids outfits for such a special occassion.

Bridesmaid dresses
First thing’s first – the dress. You will probably be guided by the wedding party as to the style and colour of the bridesmaid or flower girl dress, although this is sometimes given as a kids gift. The dress tends to be light colours with cute details. If however you get to choose, or can offer a view, some of the loveliest outfits for little girls can be found in Monsoon, John Lewis and Debenhams.

According to Debretts, the etiquette guide, girls that own a suitable party dress or bridesmaids dress that matches the bridal party can wear this. However, take note: “Fabrics should complement the bride’s dress – dupion, satin, organza and chiffon are the most popular choices.”

Page boy outfits
The duty of a page boy is less well known. More than just adding cute appeal, pageboys traditionally carry the brides train if it’s long, or can carry the rings on a cushion for the couple. But this isn’t always ideal when you have toddlers in tow!

There’s less pageboy outfits to choose from then girls, but there’s some lovely three-piece suits in JoJo Maman Bebe, Debenhams, Monsoon and Next. River Island also have a brilliant collection of affordable smart shoes like brogues, which also double up as great boys gifts.

Back to Debretts and they advise pageboys to wear shirts and ‘nehru-collared’ jackets with knickerbockers or short trousers. Older boys can copy the jacket with flat fronted trousers. For Scottish weddings, boys like men can wear kilts or trews accompanied with a jacket or smart jersey top.

Re-use!
With all the running around, delicious food and children’s plates and cutlery flying around, it would be a miracle if their outfit remained clean. Fear not, dresses can be dyed after the big day to give them a second lease of life!
