The Hardest Job of All
But 15 years in the industry couldn’t prepare me for parenthood, no doubt the hardest job of all.
After having my son, I returned to my job part-time. Like many parents, I worked harder, longer and more efficiently than ever before, and with less recognition too.
"You can always spot a part-time worker. They're the ones furiously typing in the corner, missing coffee breaks, eating lunch with one hand, the other on the keyboard - knowing how precious every working moment is."
However, a chance encounter with serendipity was to change everything.
The Click Moment
My Dad always says ‘when one door closes another opens’, it was hard to believe when I found out I was losing my job of 10 years. But a chance encounter with serendipity was to change everything...
One typical teatime, my two-year old fussy eater was having a meltdown as usual. He loves his toys, especially Thomas and friends, so I reached out for his favourite toy train and decided to create a make-shift track around his plate... and that’s where it all began.
My first instinct was to head to Amazon to buy a train plate, yet nothing existed, so I decided that maybe I should give it a shot - I mean, how hard could it be?
Yeah, quite hard as it turns out… but not impossible!
From there I immersed myself in the world of children’s eating habits, injection moulding, intellectual property and learning how to be a start-up. The journey is long and continues. Making something from scratch was tough, there was no blueprint, no product I could buy and brand up as my own. But it served to be a great learning experience.
Keeping Mealtimes on ‘the Right Track’
Nearly two years' later, the first ever children’s plate with a built-in track was launched!
Designed for little ones, Munchy Play® children's plates invite kids to sit at the table and keeps them entertained, with food the focus. For any parent that struggles at mealtimes, or has a train or car obsessed kid, it’s the perfect solution!
Currently in our collection there's three fun kids dinner plates to choose from. This includes a train-theme Choo-Choo plate for locomotive loving tots, a racing Vroom-Vroom car plate, for those with a need for speed, and the perfect picnic plate for kids - the Tea Party plate. All three are now available on Amazon.
And we're proud to say, they’re made and manufactured right here in the UK.
Reinventing the Meal
Starting a business is harder than I imagined and fraught with challenges, but it has also been exhilarating and extremely rewarding.
With many talented parents left with limited work options while raising a family, it’s no surprise that ‘mumpreneurs’ are on the rise. It shows that creativity can blossom at any time in life, and that you don’t need to be a ‘millennial’ to be a start-up. In fact, the years of experience gained in the work place coupled with life skills that parenting throws at you, are the perfect combination for a strong head for business.
